About Brent

I completed my Tasmanian Certificate of Education at Guilford Young College - Hobart between the years of 2013-2014. Following a gap year of work and travel, I moved to Melbourne to start my Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Commerce degree. However I took some real world advice about aligning my studies to my interests and goals resulting in a transfer to a Bachelor of Information Systems after completing my first year of study.
Currently, I am a third year student enrolled in a double degree - Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in Marketing)/Bachelor of Information Systems at Deakin University.
My most notable academic award/achievement to date is being awarded the highly prestigious Vice-Chancellor’s Academic Excellence Scholarship, including being invited to participate in the Vice Chancellor’s Professional Excellence Program (VCPEP). To be eligible for this scholarship and program you must have received an ATAR of 95 or above and have contributed considerably to extra-curricular activities and the community. The VCPEP program involves being mentored by an academic within my faculty at the university and to commit to ongoing personal and professional development; all whilst maintaining strong academic results. I have found this experience extremely beneficial and have developed both personally and professionally as a result.
During my second year of University, I was fortunate enough to gain work experience at Epworth Health Corporate. While undertaking this work experience, I gained an understanding and appreciation for the work that is done in Epworth's Information Systems department. During this time I shadowed the work of the Deputy Chief Information Officer, Business Analysts, Project Managers, Outcomes Managers, Change Managers, and the on-site IT support team. For me, this experience was invaluable as working with all staff including clinical, business and IT stakeholders opened up my career aspirations into a field I previously did not see myself working in.
I am involved in a wide range of extra-curricular activities within the university. In 2017 I was invited to join Deakin University’s Department of Information Systems and Business Analytics Advisory Board as a Student Representative. In this role, I provide advice to the faculty on all aspects of educational programs, including potential areas for development of new courses, or changing aspects of the existing undergraduate and postgraduate courses. I provide advice on areas for potential industry links and placements from a student perspective.
In 2017, I became a Deakin Student Ambassador. This role requires me to be the face of Deakin University and a key influence for prospective students' decision to study at Deakin. I provide information and advice from a student-centred viewpoint which helps to break down barriers and increase awareness of higher education in general and Deakin University in particular. I am currently involved in a wide variety of activities throughout the recruitment year and across a variety of audiences; including school leavers, careers advisers, parents and non-school leavers such as TAFE and mature age students.
Through my previous employment as an Assistant Manager at Boost Juice I have furthered my education by completing a Certificate II in Retail Services from Franklyn Scholar and a Certificate III in Retail Operations from MEGT Institute. I have developed strong leadership and communication skills while providing mentoring and coaching to teams. My position at Boost in the flagship company store enabled me to not only gain proficiency in working to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), but also test and review procedures to be released across the Boost network of 450+ stores internationally. In addition to trialling SOP's, I was involved in the filming of operations training videos for the Boost E-Network staff training system.
