About Matthew

I am currently in my 3rd year of an undergraduate degree in psychology, with a major in people management at Deakin University in Burwood and have attended the university since 2015. I have averaged distinctions in most of my subjects.
Whilst at school I was involved in various charity works, including being a White Ribbon Ambassador for Ballarat Clarendon College from Year 10 until graduation in 2013. In 2012 I participated in a charity program in Papua New Guinea run by the school. This required me to orchestrate various fundraising ventures prior to departure. Whilst in PNG, we provided basic first aid to the natives of Milne Bay alongside Doctors and developed relationships with the local villages to provide them with essential resources for healthy living. Due to my involvement and interest in charity work, I was given the role of Community Service leader in 2013 which required me to organise and assist in fundraising events within the school.
In 2014 I was successful in obtaining a "Gap Assistant" position at Harrow School, London which is renowned as being one of the worlds’ most exclusive schools. As a Gap Assistant I was required to fulfil various roles within the School. One of these roles was a boarding house tutor which required me to provide emotional and academic support to students and was responsible for their well-being whilst on duty. I was also in charge of various sporting teams. I independently coached a cricket and soccer team, which required me to organise and structure training sessions, motivate students to achieve their best, report and liaise with the head of sport about the student’s developments and be responsible for their wellbeing whilst travelling for away-matches. I also worked in the administration offices, IT and marketing departments which provided me with great insight into the inner workings of an incredibly successful school. Furthermore, I was also required to fulfil duties in the sporting complex and school cafeteria.
I have consistently worked in hospitality since the age of 19, including during my University degree to fund my living expenses, at times working up to 25 hours a week. I was given the responsibility of headwaiter at a successful restaurant over the 2015/2016 summer period in the beach side town of Lorne. These added responsibilities included being accountable for all of front of house operations during service, which comprised, but was not limited to, front of house staff, organising bookings and promptly providing solutions to problems as they occurred. Although it was very challenging at times, I thoroughly enjoyed the demands and pressure that came with this position, and I am extremely proud of my ability to successfully fulfil this role.
Most recently I was accepted into a Positive Psychology intensive subject at Maastricht University in Holland, which ran over the month of January in 2018. I was awarded an academic scholarship to help fund this. The subject explored ideas surrounding human enhancement through various interventions, which can be applied in the organisational setting. This was an excellent opportunity, as such a subject is not currently offered in Australia. I was able to learn from inspiring academics and professionals who are at the forefront of this 3rd wave of psychology and applying their research in the business world.
I enjoy participating in social sports (futsal, soccer and cricket) as well as cycling for fitness and pleasure. I also enjoy attending music and art events and socialising with friends. Working in hospitality, I have developed a genuine interest in food, wine and the restaurant scene, as well as an enjoyment for cooking.
