About Abhyuday

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Abhyuday Vishwakarma Mechanical Engineering
The science of today is the technology of tomorrow, and I am the kind of person who enthusiastically looks forward to tomorrow. Growing up in a family filled with science graduates combined with a love for anything with wheels, has made me confident that automobile engineering is the perfect option.
I consider technology to be ambiguous, it is like poetry of reality. Technology is very subjective. The focus of each set of eyes in the vastly diverse field of technology is different. And my eyes have always been searching for solutions, solutions to the cons in technology, cons to be eliminated.
When I was 12 years old, I was stuck in traffic and wondered why it was necessary for cars to smoke like humans. But I was too late in asking the question, as the epitome of entrepreneurs, Elon musk had already come up with tesla. My inquisitive nature has always caused me to play a game of ping pong while questioning the laws of nature and technology, because blind faith has never been my cup of tea.
Cars in particular, have fascinated me to such an extent that I have spent all my teenage years studying, researching, and getting to know more and more about these pieces of craftsmanship. There hasn't been any magazine left unread, or any sitcom about cars I haven't watched. All this research and studying not only intensified my passion for wheels, but also helped me gain more knowledge than I did in school or college. As a result, there have been many moments where I have had the upper hand during discussions and debates in this field.
So when I'm asked, where do I see myself in the next 10 years, or how will I transform my passion into a reality, the answer is clear. My road map would be to attain a bachelor’s degree and work for a while. I want to do an MBA and finally get settled in a multinational automotive company like Volkswagen, BMW etc. After working for few years, I see myself gaining enough experience, resources, connection and technology, that I can come back to my country and start my own firm. I want to startup a company working with the vision to reinvent and revolutionise how people of India commute. The basic and the initial ideologies would be to have two variants of every product; namely Sports and Eco. With two different price ranges, respectively, to cater every class of the society. Taking up this course will be a big step toward achieving my professional goals.
To help me achieve my goals, I have at my disposal a couple of strengths that have served me well thus far. ▪ Communication: I establish quick connections with people. Being sociable has always been a natural part of who I am as person, and I find it easy to make friends. Communication, whether in large or small groups, has never been problematic for me in the past. Public speaking has also been my forte. ▪ Improvisation: I have been fortunate enough to be in situations that have taught me how to improvise. Some very recent examples of this would be using old rusted springs from a car to hook flyers for the promotion of an automotive quiz in college. During my internship at Mahindra and Mahindra, the company received a huge order of nuts and bolts, which were required to be separated in order to be used. I suggested we organize a competition in the city square that would reward whoever unscrewed the most number of sets in 5 minutes. Many people participated, we got the job done, and someone received a prize.
I must be wise enough to list my weakness too. My biggest weakness is that I tend to take on more than I can handle at times. There are so many interesting options around, and to me, life is like a buffet, where I want to savor everything on offer - I want to taste all the curries and leave no pudding untouched. An example of this would be when I decided to play the guitar for our college band. There was so much more I could learn, but playing the guitar coupled with my course, soccer and table tennis, were a lot to handle. I eventually had to learn to prioritize, and my love for automobiles had to come first, as this was the field I could clearly envision would be a part of my future.
In addition to becoming a member of the student council, there were several interesting clubs that would help me hone my skills and teach me plenty. Being a part of these clubs, taught me how to better manage my time.
Over the past two years, four particular instances taught me a lot.
  1. As a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE Manipal|India) club, I worked in the technical department and also assisted with event management. I helped host events like Kraftswagen and Unscrew for the Manipal University fest, Techtatva. I was selected to be part of a panel that interviewed and recruited new members. The process taught me the importance of good leadership.
  2. The director of ICAS appointed me to the cultural board. This provided me with several interesting experiences such as being the lead guitarist in a rock band; writing, directing and acting in a play, which also allowed me to dabble in casting and learn to recognize talent and find the best fits for each role; and finally, managing logistics while organizing events.
  3. At an entrepreneurship event organized by the college, I presented my idea on a battery powered eco-friendly rickshaw. I had a detailed presentation about the design and advantages. My main aim was to make this eco-commuter a part of Manipal’s many inventions and it would replace the smoke emitting petrol powered auto rickshaws in Manipal campus.
  4. To understand how an industry works, I interned with Mahindra & Mahindra, where I learned, how an assembly line works for the ‘BOLERO’ car production unit. I was also stationed at QC (quality check) to operate the ‘dashboard switches’ and prepare a checklist. While interning with the company, I learned how to use the AutoCAD software.

Since I am a transfer student, I’d applied to universities in USA and Germany. I did receive acceptances from Drexel, MSOE, Utah, and Michigan tech, but all these universities were quoting a very high tuition fee. Another reason to decline those offers were looking critically at the present situation of US, and it's evident that Indians are facing a lot hindrances in getting jobs or even a stable lifestyle. The extremes of climate was also an issue. Universities in Germany had language issues, as it was mandatory to know German upto A2A level. So I felt that the Undergraduate study in Australia holds a lot of promise to me. Graduating from Australia rather than in my home country, would be beneficial for me as I would be exposed to latest advancements in fields of technology and have the opportunity to be a part of highly diverse communities. RMT is ranked among the top 15 universities in Australia and 32nd in the world among universities less than 50 years old. These stats beat the ranking of all major universities in India which is again a prominent reason for me to study abroad. Not only are overseas programmes and departments more prestigious, they also have far better facilities, laboratories and a more favourable culture of research. Top faculty members are often more accessible and it is easier to become affiliated with a laboratory or institute. Academic politics exists everywhere, and Indians may suffer from occasional discrimination due to caste reservations. Two big reasons why I chose to be a part of the engineering program at RMIT, are the faculty and research center. In addition to the educational excellence that RMIT is well known for, the cultural and social events organized by the university are two other aspects that stands out RMIT when compared to universities like Deakin or La Trobe, so I find it very appealing and hope to be a part of some day. RMIT has also offered me a 5000AUD scholarship which seals the deals for me. So when I think about Melbourne and RMIT, they both are far from being mundane, I know I will encounter something new and exciting everyday which will add panache and zing to my endeavours. The city with plethora of features and the way it blends culture, sport, fashion, the arts and amazing cuisine in an interesting and cosmopolitan way, will be a perfect milestone to my journey. I hope to participate in all the college events and do my best to become an asset to the university. I believe that I will be able to contribute to and learn from the academically challenging environment at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.
