About Juan

Hey! I'm Miguel, a 3rd year Science (Advanced) student majoring in Biochemistry and Microbiology/Immunology. On a personal level, I love travelling to places like Japan and am a lover of their culture and language (I also learn the language at uni for fun!). I'm also an avid figure collector of characters from Japanese pop culture and enjoy a balanced social life with like-minded people.
So how has my education formed who I am today? For much of my life I've been interested how life can be thought of as a complex product of simple building blocks. This has piqued my curiosity in not only the fundamentals of molecular biology, but also how evolution governs change. This very thought process has shaped how I am as an adaptive individual, and I believe it is the thought process which will drive progress.
I think of myself as a well-rounded individual with astute interpersonal skills supported by a strong academic background and work experience: • Research Scholarship at the Research Centre for Infectious Diseases (The University of Adelaide). I worked with Dr Danny Wilson during the Summer in 2016-2017 and was trained in various molecular biology tools in the context of the malaria parasite. • Research Placement at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI). I had the opportunity to conduct a semester-long research project in 2017 with Dr Tim Sargeant investigating the link between nutrition and the onset of Alzheimer's disease.
My future career goals are within industry (i.e. Australian biotechnology) or to pursue academic research, but I'm always open to new and unexplored opportunities.
