Work Experience Summer Student at Murdoch Children Research Institute Nov 2016 - Jan 2017
The Child Health CheckPoint involved one-off physical health assessments of 11-12 year old children and their parents conducted across Australia in 2015 and 2016. Michelle joined the CheckPoint team over the summer of 2016-2017 and assisted with the data management tasks. These included preparing data documentation for more than 3000 variables. These documents (the Data Dictionary and Rational Document) would be released for public use in 2017. The task required attention to details, understanding and turning complex details into simple readable summaries. She also worked on a subset of these data Children’s history of hospitalisation and infections, which involved transcribing, data cleansing and data integration. Through developing transcription rules, she learned making decision on data management with consideration of the usability for future statistical analysis.
Volunteer Experience LIVE Project - Arts Centre Melbourne Jun - Jul 2017
In 2017, the Arts Centre Melbourne sought to put on a performance of “Three Monks” by the China National Theatre for Children as part of the Centre’s Families and Arts Learning program. Michelle was part of a team of five international students who undertook self-monitored market research within Melbourne’s Chinese community and provided recommendations on marketing strategies to reach this specific target audience. As well as being engaged in the market research, Michelle was responsible for coordinating team meeting, preparing agendas and minutes, and managing communications with the project client. This work was undertaken within a short time window, ahead of a successful performance on the “Three Monks” on 2 September 2017.
Extra-curricular Activity Youth Charity Society Committee - External Volunteering Team Officer, Assistant Manager Mar 2016 - Apr 2017
The Youth Charity Society is a university club that encourages young people to volunteer by providing volunteering opportunities for them to participate in wide variety of community programs. Michelle joined the YCS committee as the External Volunteering Team Officer in 2016 and Assistant Manager in 2017. Her responsibilities included maintaining and coordinating contact with organisers and club members, planning events, and managing communications and logistics regarding events to ensure adequate attendance.
