About Dieu
Youth comes but once in a lifetime” – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
I am Lyn Nguyen, and this is the quote that inspires and motivates me to chase my dreams. The portfolio career is my goal in the media and communication industry. I want to be an event coordinator for entertainment companies, especially working closely with celebrities. Additionally, working in the fashion magazine as fashion publicist was my dream when I was in high school. Leaving my family in Vietnam and studying Bachelor of Mass Communication at QUT are new chapters in my life.
Professional values and skills are essential things in helping me to achieve my goals. Firstly, my values that I stand for are passion, perfectionist and teamwork. These values identified who am I in the world. Passion in media and communication industry is the fundamental reason that made me step out from my comfort zone and moved to Brisbane. Also, I always make an effort to achieve the perfection in my work. The more time I dedicate to the job, the more perfectionist I get. However, I cannot do it without the support from other members. Teamwork is my last core value, and it reflected on my work results. Building good relationships with team members is the best way for me to complete tasks in the workplace. Secondly, I continuously try to improve core skills such as self-awareness, active listening skills, analytical skills every day for the future career. Regarding self-awareness, I know about my strengths and weaknesses and how to maximize strengthens while improving weaknesses. Having clarity about myself is the best way to build my strong brand in the industry. Turning to active listening skills, I always give full attention to my other members when they speak and provide feedback that they need. By this way, we can get good results. Besides, analytical skills help me gather information, articulate, visualize and solve problems. I break down a series of complicated bits of information and develop an overall conclusion.
However, I also need to apply volunteer and internship opportunities to gain experience and use my values and skills. I am currently a member of AIESEC - a non-governmental, not-for-profit organization that provides young people with leadership development, cross-cultural global internships and volunteer exchange experiences across the globe. Working for AIESEC, I learned how to build good relationships with customers, how to communicate with different partners from other countries, how to deliver a successful event from making plans to promoting it. Besides, I also an event connector of QUT Connect. I assist staffs in setting up and packing down workshops during Orientation week, flagship events such as Harmony Day, KickSTART, student leadership conferences at my university. On the other hand, I got a remote internship with Mess Magazine based in Los Angles. My role is writing fashion articles from reviews of fashion weeks to fashion trends and contacting designers via emails to invite them to collaborate with the the magazine.
Having experience in different fields is one of my uniqueness that I contribute to the journalism and communication industry. These experiences help me have an opportunity to network with more people and gain knowledge from business to creative aspects. Furthermore, living in Brisbane as an international student helped me contribute to the diversity of Australia and the industry as well. With the Asian background, I can use my own experience to express Asian perspectives through media. Besides, enthusiasm is the last thing that makes me stand out from the crowd. I am still an undergraduate student and feel curious about the world and try to find answers to all my questions. I am always willing to learn all things that I do not know about this industry.
